The Friday Five for June 8

by mark mclean

Wow, Friday already? Hard to believe. Seems like only yesterday it was Thursday. Well it’s a good thing. I have been reading lots of great blog posts that I want to share with you today. So hope you find time to settle into that lounger by the pool, whip out your ipad and enjoy the following amaazing finds.

When I saw this I thought of two blogs close to my heart; David Fleming’s http://www.torontorealtyblog.com/  and Queen Street own Melanie And Brendan’s awesome blog  http://www.getwhatyouwant.ca/category/blog/ Remember that your blog has to displace competitors by appealing to readers and customers in new ways.  The landscape is still changing but here are 7 ways to use your blog to disrupt and win a place on your customer’s short-list.  http://pushingsocial.com/7-clever-ways-your-blog-can-disrupt-your-industry/

Umm, hello. Did you here this? The stats on video from the National Association of Realtors show that 72 percent of home sellers want their agent to use video, and 3 percent actually do. We also know that 92 percent of consumers are starting their search to find a home and a Realtor online. Seems like a bit of a no brainer. I did a video for my Director at Large campaign that was viewed nearly 800 times. As of this morning I have no idea if I won or not, but that is still 800 impressions I wouldn’t have got if I didn’t do a video. Check out this great post from Inman Next. http://next.inman.com/2012/06/connect-with-your-clients-through-video/

This is in no way related to Real Estate but I thought this was a hilarious use for Twitter. I am a visual person who loves graphs, infographs, charts, etc,  because you can take numbers and create a visual with them. So imagine this, Smoothies made from fruit mentions on Twitter. Over five days of experimentation, 10 different fruits made their way into smoothies with the same relative proportion as their appearance in tweets. So if people talked more about pineapple than strawberries, then smoothies would taste more like pineapple. The idea is data you can taste–what the team calls “a graph in a glass.”  http://www.fastcodesign.com/1669969/machine-scans-twitter-for-mentions-of-fruit-then-turns-them-into-smoothies#1 As an added bonus, there are a couple of cool videos too.

Here is something on branding I foud pretty interesting.  Recently a research study was conducted to find out what corporate executives thought about their brand strategy initiatives post the recession and uncover the steps they would take in the next 18 months. The results are here. If you are thinking of building a brand for yourself, check out what direction the big boys are going in. http://www.brandingbusiness.com/2012/05/how-the-recession-transformed-the-business-of-branding/

Finally one more thing about Twitter and Blogging. There are many bloggers and brands that just leap onto Twitter, setup an account and start  tweeting. This random approach is fine if you are a person that is doing tweeting for fun and you want to share your rambling rantings to any Joe that  wants to leap into your stream and share sweet nothings. Don’t be blinded by the shiny new Twitter tool, it needs to be used wisely and if you put in place a planned strategy it will deliver results that will delight and amaze. http://www.jeffbullas.com/2011/06/27/how-to-create-a-twitter-marketing-strategy-that-rocks/

Have a great weekend everyone!
